Dr. Fernando Macário is Group Chief Medical Officer at M42 and serves as Chief Medical Officer at Diaverum, a role he has held since February 2019. He joined Diaverum in 2001 and has since played a central role in advancing clinical excellence and innovation across the organization.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Macário and his team have pioneered a range of clinical strategy programmes, contributing to the development of Diaverum’s integrated dialysis care model—a cornerstone of M42’s value-based renal care strategy.
A nephrologist by training, Dr. Macário brings extensive experience in renal medicine spanning both basic and clinical research. He served for a decade as Medical Coordinator of the Kidney Transplant Unit at the University Hospital of Coimbra. He also served as President of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation from 2009 to 2016, and is now an Honorary Member.
Dr. Macário has served on the boards of several scientific societies, including the European Board of Transplantation, and has acted as a consultant to the Portuguese Ministry of Health.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and nephrology books, and has also contributed to the field as a clinical trial investigator, scientific advisor, and organiser of international nephrology and transplantation conferences.
